A digger is used to remove materials and soil to a suitable subgrade level, in some situations where there is no access for our small digger this would be done by manual labour i.e. jackhammers for removing old paths and good old fashioned shovels, crow bars and wheelbarrows.
It is then back filled with a base course which is then compacted where required. All the edges are then boxed up using wooden timber and pegs to the correct shape and size required. Steel reinforcing mesh is then installed which is standard on all our concrete work.
The next stage is the pouring, placing and finishing of the new concrete which may be a couple of days after construction depending on concrete availability. All our concrete is 100mm or 4 inches thick, this would either be plain grey concrete with a non-slip finish or coloured concrete with a non-slip finish or the popular exposed aggregate with a small amount of colour added. The coloured concrete and the exposed aggregate will be acid washed and two coats of sealer applied. Expansion joints/cuts are standard on all our concrete jobs. The final stage is unboxing and site tidy up. The new concrete can generally be walked on within 48 hours depending on the time of the year i.e. winter or summer and can be driven on within 7 to 10 days.
